After a season that saw her win her first-ever tournament and become the first Canadian player to ever reach a Grand Slam singles final, Eugenie Bouchard has been named the WTAs Most Improved Player of the Year for 2014. The 20-year-old from Westmount, Quebec had the best season of her young career, reaching the semi-finals of both the Australian and French Opens and reaching the Wimbledon final. Im honoured to be voted the WTA Most Improved Player of the Year, said Bouchard in a release. Thank you for voting. My goal is to try to improve every single day, and I feel like I did that this year. But while Im proud of my accomplishments, Ive already set new goals I want to strive to reach next year. I look forward to continuing to improve. In May, Bouchard defeated Karolina Pliskova to capture the Nurnberger Versicherung Cup for her first ever WTA tournament victory. She became the first Canadian to win a WTA tournament since Aleksandra Wozniak won the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California in 2008. Earlier in the fall, Bouchard rose to No. 5 in the WTA rankings becoming the first ever Canada, male or female, to crack the top-five in the world rankings and qualified for the 2014 WTA World Finals, where she was eliminated in the round robin stage. She currently sits at No. 7 in the rankings. Bouchard is next in action later this month, when she will compete in the International Premier Tennis League beginning on November 28, a team tournament featuring some of the sports top players.
